The city is mostly an agricultural industry except the prison is also a large employer also there is a giant geothermal power production plant the Leathers Geothermal Power Plant in the area that is a great employer as well.

The city of Calipatria is located in the Sonoran Desert region of California along the main highway, Highway 111 that if you follow it north west you will pass the Salton Sea (California’s largest lake and a man made accident) and home to the Salton Sea National Wildlife Refuge (migrating birds pass and stop coming through the flyway corridor) up into the Coachella Valley into Palm Desert and across ending in Palm Springs California all of the stops along the way of Highway 111 are a great way to see and learn lots about desert communities in Southern California.

Next if you are into art and do not mind a little religion then just north out of Calipatria in Niland there is a colorful artistic artworks of artist and religious figure Leonard Knight and thousands of gallons of paint, adobe, straw in the middle of the natural California Desert is these painted slabs of rock and signs expressing the “God Loves Everyone” unique and well worth the visit.

Because of the Wildlife Preserve Corridors you might be afforded an opportunity to hike a little into either of the corridors and explore nature and natual environments and learn new things.
