Introduction to Watch Making
With a world of sales people selling this and selling that, we are pleased to share a story written in the late 1800’s, a principle that today stands true and stands proud. This is about the career of a watchmaker, however this applies to anything you want to become.
Logic.
Here is Williams story that is timeless

Tools can be made to do a certain part, which nothing else can do.
Instructions are indispensable to the workman who would be A-1.
But Push – everlasting push, first last and all the time, is absolutely necessary if you wish to stand out as one of the very best workmen in your section.
For if you make unusual success, it will not be because you are real bright and smart, so to speak, but it will be because you have put in more hours learning how to become a good workman.
What brought success to the greatest workman that ever lived, namely, Thomas A. Edison? – hard work, for he has worked the hardest of any man who ever lived.
Anyone can succeed, and be a wonderful success; for there is no secret about it; it is nothing but hard work well directed. Well directed simply means that a certain amount of knowledge, usually reading in that particular subject be done. And to balance a man in a general way, he should do a certain amount of general reading.
For anytime we find a well balanced man, it is safe to say that that man has done quite a large amount of general reading.
Doubtless, you have heard the quotation:
“If you want anything done go to a busy man, for the idlers have no time.???
And so people in general will say that they do not have time to read.
An old-time and successful friend used to say to me:
“In a business way, people do those things which drive them the hardest, and socially they do the things they like best.???
And there you have it.
If people do not read – they don’t want to.
Also, if they don’t work – they don’t want to.
But, work got Edison there; and it will get you there – or you won’t get there.
Putting it in good plain English, it is up to you.
Do not blame luck: lazy people always do that.
Do not blame circumstances – make your circumstances.
Foreigners come here from all lands with no money; no friends; not even our language; yet they work their way to the very top in American Life.
He is a “poor fish??? of an American, who lies down on the job.
Workmen we divide into 5 classes;
Bad
Poor
Fair
Good
Fine
You, alone, must decide which you will be – for you may be anyone of them that you choose.
You, alone, must “get there??? for no one will push you along.
Most Watchmakers think that they, themselves are good, but that their competitors are bad; do not get this opinion.
Now – where will you stand 20 years from today.
It’s up to you; don’t blame anyone else; just GET THERE.
