The city is known as “the City of Trees and PhDs” and it is no wonder because this is a college town with 7 higher education institutions located east of the city of Los Angeles and this city sits at the base of the San Gabriel Mountains. The city has large shade trees lining the streets and older residential homes adorn the city.

The city also has a famous highway running right along the base of the San Gabriel Mountains it is Route 66 a very old and historic highway that takes drivers through California and the rest of the US.

Because this is a city of higher education we will start with a visit to the Pitzer College but not to actually visit the college but a 10 acre parcel of land named after its creator John R. Rodman, that you can learn from. The 16 Arboretum gardens you are going to visit will teach you how to build your own natural environmental friendly gardens like how to build a drought-tolerant and native landscapes so to see where you will be visiting please visit the John R. Rodman Arboretum.

Again more educational and fun learning from the city of Claremont at the non-profit Rancho Santa Ana Botanic Gardens a large 86 acre Botanical Garden featuring over 70,000 native California plants that began in 1927 though the gardens you will be visiting actually relocated in 1951 to its current location so please visit and enjoy a nice long walk around this large Botanical Garden in Claremont.

One massive park and a place to get away from it all whatever “it” is provided by Claremont at the Claremont Hills Wilderness Park located to the north of the city. It is rugged with many inaccessible terrain areas however if you like to hike, ride your mountain bike, take a walk, let your dog run or do some horseback riding and take time out and do some thinking or exploring you are going to love the Claremont Hills Wilderness Park.
