DEMAND FOR BETTER WORKMEN

Demand for better workmen
While we often hear of the wonderful time-keeping qualities of some of the old watches, which were made 50 or 60 years ago, still, as time has gone on it seems sure that the demand has constantly been for a greater degree of accuracy in timepieces – particularly watches.

With watches of a suitable size, and properly carried there seems to have been success; and the latter-day 23 jeweled watches with their other improvements all tending toward higher grade workmanship have given a high degree of satisfaction.

The trend, therefore, in workmanship, has been toward the better.

With wrist watches, while the timekeeping satisfaction seems to be very poor, still to keep them actually running and not actually  
    butcher the tiny mechanism out of commission has surely required a higher degree of skill than was available 25 years ago.

I will not say that the trade is actually getting the improved workmanship that is required, yet it will sooner or later get the degree of workmanship that is warranted by the prices obtainable for the work.

Early groups and Organizations
Much interest seems to be taken at present by various Jewelers Association, U.S. Veterans Vocational School, State Board of Education, Horological Schools, and others, to bring into the trade as many as possible, and to improve the efficiency of the watchmakers.

As it is estimated that: there are twice as many watches carried as 25 years ago; that they (especially wrist watches) require repairing twice as often as then; and the cost to repair each time is twice as much, that in dollars the watch repairing of the U.S. amounts to 8 times the amount of 1900.

The A-1 Workman
There seems to be plenty of demand for better workmen. The fact of there being so many poor workmen makes it all the more attractive for one who determines to be A-1 plus.

HAPPINESS IS IN YOUR WORK

Happiness is in your work
Very often of late I have thought that we old time Americans are not so happy as we should be as we have had the benefits of the many advantages of being brought up in this wonderful United States, which, with all its faults, is the very finest country that the world has ever known.

The Saying:
“Automobiles are quite human after all, the cheaper they are, the louder the horn,??? seems quite true regarding a lot of the cheap people we hear “cussing??? the United States continuously, but never leaving it.

Even those who are forced to leave I, (Emma Goldman as an illustration *) would be mighty glad to get back.
Yet, many people among us are happy; I have in mind those coming from foreign countries like Russia, Czecho-Slovakia and various other countries; and – is it necessary to come from some foreign country to be happy? As a whole they surly seem much happier then our own born-and-bread Yankee stock.

Let’s be cheerful and happy.

*Emma Goldman born June 27, 1869 and died May 14, 1940.
She was an anarchist known for her political activism writing and speeches
Born in Kovno in the Russian Empire she played a pivotal role in the development of anarchist political philosophy.

In 1917 Emma Goldman was arrested and served two years in prison for conspiring to “induce persons not to register??? for the newly instated draft. After release from prison in America she and several hundred others were rearrested and deported to Russia. Realize that women did not speak out as a general rule of thumb and she was lionized as a free-thinking “rebel woman??? by admirers at the same time she was derided by critics as an advocate of politically motivated murder and violent revolution.
